Doom Ouroboros, aka artist Michael Wimpy, inspires me with his expansive imagination and balanced approach to creativity. Michael uses digital and physical art techniques to manifest his fantastic visions, which often depict subjects and objects shaped by mythology, paganism, sci-fi, horror, and psychedelia. Much of his imagery is inspired doom/psych/stoner/rock/metal music and his body of work includes fun fan art for his favorite bands.
While he uses a myriad of physical mediums, I most love watching Michael work with ink. Whether by brush, pen, or linocut print, I appreciate his use of ink to create contour, dimension, and mood in his pieces. Michael’s color palette is incredible as well, and strikes me so intensely because I’m intimidated to use vibrant yellows, oranges, and tertiary colors in combination with earth tones in my own work! I often look at his airbrush work and sometimes try to replicate it with mediums I’m familiar with.
Aside from being an incredibly talented creator with a distinctly unique aesthetic, this buddy is one of my favorite people. Sometimes it’s possible to align with a person in a completely unexpected, cosmic way, and all you have to do it say hello at the right time. Yet being aligned doesn’t mean we’re the same; our mediums, processes, themes, and working speed are very different. Michael reminds me that staying connected to a diverse group of artists and exploring other creators’ work is essential if I want to keep growing!
